Clayco Receives Highest Achievement For Sustainable Construction Project
St. Louis, MO (November 23, 2009)
Clayco Inc. has received superior recognition from the Associated General Contractors (AGC) of St. Louis for its work on the Novus International Global Headquarters in St. Charles, Mo. The project was honored with the AGC Keystone Project of the Year . Sustainable Construction Award. Joining Clayco on the project, Forum Studio acted as architect.
“Different from many other awards, the AGC Keystone Awards recognize the highest achievements of St. Louis construction firms for their efforts to deliver solutions to challenges faced during construction, rather than based on building aesthetics. While the Novus building is magnificent and eye-catching, its innovatively constructed high-performance features were the driving force behind its successful development,” said Paul Todd Merrill, P.E., LEED AP, Clayco’s director of sustainable construction. “This is the first year that the AGC Keystone Awards have included a category specifically for sustainable construction. We are extremely honored to be the first selected for this new distinction.”
In its 12th year, the Keystone Awards honor the skill, teamwork, and innovation involved in a project and its contribution to enhancing the quality of life for the St. Louis community. Chosen from more than 50 submissions, the Novus International project was distinguished based on its outstanding sustainable construction processes.
The Novus International headquarters features a multi-use office and laboratory facility with new and remodeled space. Competed in December 2008, the construction was performed around a fully occupied lab facility while not disrupting ongoing business operation. Work included overhauling the entire HVAC systems of the existing research facility in a three-week shut down, as part of six separate, carefully sequenced phases of work.
Achieving Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Platinum certification by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC), the project included an environmentally-focused framework featuring a 5,000-square-foot array of solar panels, currently the largest array in the state of Missouri, that provide a renewable energy source. LEED Platinum is the highest level of certification available for sustainable buildings with USGBC.
