Clayco Inc. And Concrete Strategies Receive National Honors For Tilt-up Achievements
St. Louis, MO (January 21, 2010)
Two St. Louis construction firms have recently been honored for exceptional use of site-cast Tilt-Up concrete, successfully illustrating its variety, beauty and flexibility. Clayco Inc. and Concrete Strategies LLC received national Tilt-Up Achievement Awards for their work on construction projects for Villa Lighting, Gesa Credit Union, and Procter & Gamble.
Presented by the Tilt-up Concrete Association, the annual awards competition recognizes and honors creative, innovative and aesthetic uses of concrete in construction. According to Joe Vitale, president of Concrete Strategies, “Clayco and Concrete Strategies were able to showcase Tilt-Up’s unique ability to work with a variety of building types and highlight its capacity for fast-track results that maximize client dollars through these leading examples of modern Tilt-Up construction.”
The Villa Lighting project is a 220,000-square-foot tilt-up warehouse/office building featuring 90,000-square-feet of wall panels, of which 25,000-square-feet were cast with a thick brick material supplied by innovative brick systems. Completed in late 2008, the new downtown St. Louis facility, which serves as the company headquarters, allowed Villa Lighting to expand its capabilities and meet the needs of their customers.
The Gesa Credit Union Corporate Office Headquarters is a 74,000-square-foot office building built in Richland, Wash. The project, which achieved LEED certification, incorporated sustainable concepts into its design and construction by utilizing concrete and tilt-up processes for the building’s structure.
Also proven with the completion of this project is the ease of incorporating tilt-up construction into the overall architectural appeal of office buildings throughout the nation. The front façade of the building is a glass skin wall, while on the back side of the building, the tilt-up structure ties into a bridge way structure on the second level of the office building that serves as access to the parking lot.
Winning in the retail category, the Procter & Gamble facility is a one-story 400,000-square-foot distribution center and an 85,000-square-foot state-of-the-art paper processing plant that manufactures products like paper towels and toilet paper. Located in Brigham City, Utah, the complicated tilt-up project featured 220,000-square-feet of wall panels and required an expedited schedule. The project is currently registered and pursuing LEED NC Version 2.2 certification. In addition, this was the first “green field” manufacturing plant built in the United States by Procter & Gamble in over 30 years.
