History

The Clayco concept was founded in July, 1984 by Robert G. Clark.

A quote from Clark’s father, Harold, best describes the eternal founding commitment “Our Word Is Our Bond”.  This founding tenet evolved into a philosophy of hiring the best and brightest, timely paying our obligations, creating a partnership with the supply community and being selective for who we apply our craft.

From 1984 to 1990, Clayco grew from sales of $1,000,000 to approximately $40,000,000; completing industrial, process and design/build work in the St. Louis area.  In the same period the company acquired the special projects division of Brooks Erection and started a subsidiary, “ClaycoTiltUp”, to self-perform concrete wall systems.  The company also established a niche designing and constructing banking facilities and completed more than 15 facilities.

From 1990 to 1997 the company continued its rapid growth.  In 1991, Clayco acquired Accurate Construction and created a subsidiary, “Clayco-Accurate”, managed by 50% partner, Michael H. Clark.  In 1992, the company developed the technology and a business plan to become geographically diversified through the 1990’s.  Over 70% of our business during that period was completed across the country.

1997, the firm consolidated all operations into Clayco Construction Company, Inc. and four key managers purchased 44% interest of the company from Mike Clark. Mike Clark’s remaining shares were purchased by Bob Clark. The new partnership named Bob Clark, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer. In the same year, regional offices were established in Chicago and Detroit to focus core strengths in several regional major metropolitan markets while implementing a strategy to spread the national work load to a more diverse group of highly competent team members from each regional office.

In the late 1990’s Clayco clearly established itself as the largest builder of distribution facilities and tilt-up concrete wall systems in the country.  The Company continued to provide design/build services to the corporate, sports, institutional and heavy industrial markets.  During the period from 1984 to 2000 the company grew more than 40% in 9 of those 16 years.  The Company had grown to over $400,000,000 in annual revenue.

In 1999, built on its award winning safety program management services, Clayco created and perfected a Contractor Controlled Insurance Program (CCIP).  This Program has become the industry leading model for safety and risk avoidance.

In this decade Clayco has implemented steps to round out our full service strategy by creating; Forum Studio – a full service architectural and design firm as well as shoring up the institutional business with substantial health and research facility expertise.  Clayco Realty Group to provide a range of real estate services and complete third party development and Concrete Strategies to complete all concrete construction and self perform services as a third party construction entity.

The new millennium has seen stabilized revenue, and the company has focused extensive energy on refining its strategic planning, organization and critical processes and procedures.  Hal Parmelee (former Executive at Turner), as well as Ray Pieper (former president of Alberici) and Lewis Levey (founder and partner – Paragon Group) have made important contributions to the company as advisors during this period.  The strategic plan adopted in 2003 and updated in 2005 requires us to:

  • Develop a comprehensive approach to provide high value integrated real estate, design and construction as a competitive advantage;
  • Develop a leading market sector driven organization;
  • Focus on operational excellence – the development of a fully, professionally  managed organization;
  • Fully develop a leadership training culture that will satisfy a succession plan in the next decade;
  • Strengthen our financial position and profit sharing.

In 2005, the company re-branded the organization and renamed the company Clayco, Inc. and added the statement “The Art & Science of Building”, consistent with its philosophy and vision.
